Credibility

CLEAR is a synthesis, not a single source. Every pillar names the evidence it's built on - because a scoring framework that asks for named, accountable sources should be held to the same standard itself.

Where CLEAR came from

CLEAR is built as a substantial expansion of Mel Carson's 2014 AURA framework - Authenticity, Understanding, Reach, Action. AURA served its era well, but it predates the trust collapse, the AI content flood, the zero-click search environment, the community-led growth era, and the buyer self-serve shift. Each pillar needed repositioning for how content actually gets evaluated now - not a cosmetic relabel, but a rebuild against current evidence.

The evidence base

Each pillar is grounded in published research, not intuition. This is what each one draws on.

CCredibility
  • Google's Search Quality Rater Guidelines - Names Trust as "the most important member of the E-E-A-T family" - the foundation the other quality signals sit on.
  • Edelman, "In Brands We Trust?" - 81% of consumers said trusting a brand to do what's right was a major factor in their purchase decision.
LLeverage
  • McKinsey personalisation research - Companies that excel at personalisation generate 40% more revenue from those activities than average players.
EEmpathy & Resonance
  • Binet & Field, IPA Databank analysis - Across 996 effectiveness case studies, emotional campaigns were roughly twice as likely to drive profit growth as rational ones over time.
  • Jay Acunzo, Break the Wheel - Makes the case for resonance over reach - depth of connection with the right reader outperforms breadth of audience.
  • Ann Handley, Everybody Writes - The quality equation: Useful × Empathetic × Inspired - content quality is a product of all three, not a sum.
AAction & Continuity
  • Gartner B2B buying journey research - The "Sense Making" finding: more information given to a buyer can correlate with worse purchase decisions, not better ones.
  • David Spinks, The Business of Belonging - Documents community-led growth as a durable driver of continuity beyond a single conversion event.
  • Forrester - Predicts over 50% of large B2B transactions will run through digital self-serve channels by 2026.
RReach & Relevance
  • Byron Sharp, How Brands Grow - Establishes mental availability - being the brand that comes to mind - as the primary driver of category growth.
  • SparkToro / Datos zero-click search study - Roughly 58-60% of Google searches now end without a click to any website.
  • Google's own reporting on AI Overviews - Documents the scale at which AI-generated summaries now sit between content and the reader.

Why Credibility comes first

Credibility is the non-negotiable foundation - without it, no other pillar can function. That's why it's the one pillar enforced through Hard Gates rather than scored points alone: a piece can't buy its way past a credibility failure with strong Action or Reach. It's also why Credibility, Leverage, and Empathy each carry more base weight (6 questions, 12 points) than Action and Reach (5 questions, 10 points) in the default scorecard - the framework's own weighting reflects the evidence it's built on.
